Senthalir

Senthalir update – May 2008

Following the catastrophic tsunami of December 2004, a great many families living on the Eastern coast of Sri Lanka were very badly affected and underwent tremendous suffering. In its wake, the tragic loss of so many lives and the destruction of villagers’ homes and livelihood created a direful time for the remaining survivors. On realising that a very large number of children had lost their parents to this tragedy, Senthalir provided much needed accommodation for many of these children. Among the 260 children who were housed, some of the youngest were only 19 months old.

In the rebuilding of Senthalir, many donors, including commercial establishments and public institutions came forward to help. Arobanam Children’s Fund ACF-UK has spent nearly £150,000.00 to establish a new home further inland from the original site. The largest single donation of £30,000.00, received from Seiko UK Ltd, enabled the building of a large dormitory to accommodate 80 children.

The generosity of “The faculty of Art & Design at Kingston University” and other well-wishers helped ACF-UK build a large dining hall to accommodate all the children.

Our friends at LIFECYCLE funded a building for 30 pre-schoolers.

Funds for further developments within Senthalir were very kindly provided through numerous, individual donations and community related organisations.
