Internally Displaced People (IDP)

According to Amnesty International, 500,000 people are internally displaced in Sri Lanka, with the vast majority being in the Northern and Eastern provinces.

ACF-UK is utilising all resources possible to help the IDP situation in Baticaloa and Mullaitivu, So far ACF-UK has taken the responsibility to fund one months needs for 990 in Baticaloa. We also recently supported 55 families in Mullaitivu.

Unfortunately our support so far is a mere drop in the ocean…we should all dig deep into our pockets and come to their aid. With your help we can do a lot more and make a bigger difference.

This may look primitive but is still better than living under a tree as many still do.

Believe it or not this is a well, the only source of drinking water for a few families. In a land where international aid is not reaching the needy, it is the local people’s ingenious idea to build this well. ACF-UK has funded some of these wells and built temporary huts for the displaced people in Mullaitivu.

The current unrest in Sri Lanka has brought a new influx of refugees to Rameshwaram, South India. ACF-UK felt it necessary to help the children among the refugees in Rameshswaram. During a visit this year to the Mandapam camp by a committee member, we discovered 86 young children in desperate need of help. 3,000 people are living in atrocious conditions, they
don’t even have adequate toilet facilities and are not allowed to leave the camp at any time.

Children over 6, are allowed to attend the local school. However, the rest are left to the confines of the camp, with not even a slide or swing to play with. Recently the Church of South India (CSI), obtained permission to administer a day care centre for the children under 6. As always, lack of funding is the major problem, however ACF-UK is teaming up with Church of South India to fund this project

ACF-UK members have organised a few events to raise funds specifically for the IDP:

  • We had our Sponsored Walk in September 2007. (Hyperlink to Events section).
  • Our Youth Wing Members organised an evening to raise funds.
  • Another Youth Wing member Christina did a Tandem Skydiving. A brave effort indeed! (Hyperlink to Youth Wing section).

It is great to see our younger generation showing so much compassion to our kith and kin back home displaced from their homes.
